Green floors... in every colour!

This week we were very proud to be featured in Deco Magazine as the go-to environmentally-friendly flooring of choice. The double page feature can be viewed online HERE – and you can also see Deco Magazine online with their focus on eco-friendly interior solutions. We’re delighted to be included in their list of eco-friendly interior suppliers and we thought we’d share just some of the things that make Sphere8 a “green” choice – whatever colour you choose!

This is even more likely as a lot of the comparable materials to Sphere8 resin are not particularly friendly! Our poured floors are often compared to polished concrete or even vinyl and rubber, and our closest product is epoxy resin. All of these products have various advantages and disadvantages (you can learn more about how we measure up against polished concrete HERE) but environmentally Sphere8 resin wins every time. Concrete in particular depends on cement, which is a very energy and fossil-fuel dependent process. This means concrete floors are a huge contributor to carbon dioxide levels and subsequent global warming! The process also requires a lot of water to bind the materials together, which makes it even less environmentally-friendly! On top of these already questionable green credentials, chemicals are often added to concrete floors to help speed up the hardening process! Epoxy resin is not quite as damaging as concrete, but it doesn’t fare much better. Epoxy resin is derived from petroleum or crude oil – neither of which make for an eco-friendly product!

Sphere8 resin floors, rather than being petroleum based, are made from natural biopolymers – the castor bean is cultivated and pressed and results in an oil that makes up our resins. The castor bean plant is sustainable and grows rapidly in very arid areas – requiring hardly any water and without interfering in the local ecosystem. We take great pride in the fact that our main ingredient is completely sustainable – ecologically and socially, as it doesn’t interfere with local farmland.

Furthermore, these biopolymers do not release any harmful emissions into your home, and are completely free from harmful solvents and impurities (including VOCs). So the environmental benefits continue even after our products are in use. Whether you choose a Motion grey floor to imitate polished concrete (without the cement and chemicals!) or a bespoke patterned floor with specific pigments, you can trust that you are making an environmentally sound choice. Find out more about our eco-credentials in the Deco article, or call the offices to discuss with one of the team!
